If you drive with your pet in the car it is important you are aware of the rules regarding pets in vehicles. Under NSW Road Rules you can be fined and lose demerit points if you are considered to not be in full control of your vehicle because of your pet. The easiest way to comply with the law is to ensure your pet is restrained in the car (with a harness with seat belt attachment, for example). This will decrease the risk of injuries to your pet and occupants of your car from your pet should an accident occur. It will also ensure your pet won't bolt from the car if a door is opened following an accident. It seems somewhat obvious but you are prohibited from driving with a pet on your lap and doing so will attract heavy fines and loss of demerit points. Dogs in utes must be restrained to prevent them falling off and being injured.
